Identity is knowing who you are. Authenticity is being who you are.
David and Goliath is a familiar story of a shepherd defeating a giant with a sling and a stone.
But before the battlefield confrontation came a choice.
David was offered an opportunity to fight the giant dressed as someone else. King Saul.
The king thought the armor that helped him win battles would help David win too.
But they were two different people. With different talents, skills, gifts, anointing, abilities and assignments.
King Saul’s well fitting military gear weighed David down.
David told him ‘I cannot go in these for I am not used to them.’ So David took them off.” (1 Sam 17:3-40)
David knew if he was going to win he had to fight as David. Not as King Saul.
So he picked up five smooth stones, grabbed his sling and confronted the challenge in the power of “the name of the Lord of hosts . . .” 1 Sam 17:45
David focused on winning the war. Not worrying about offending the king.
With social media it’s easy to see the success of others.
We think if we dress like her, talk like her, sell, teach, lead, sing, write etc like her we will experience her success.
We might but we’ll feel like a fake doing it. Imposter syndrome is real.
You are “fearfully and wonderfully made . . intricately and skillfully formed (as if embroidered with many colors . . “ Ps 139:14 – 15. AMP
From the pasture to the palace David never attempted to imitate anyone else thinking his success required being someone else.
By choosing to live authentically we don’t either.
