She’s in the middle. Of heartache, uncertainty and unfamiliarity.
Her husband’s deceased. Her family’s far away. She has no children. She’s living a reality she never imagined.
She’s given a choice. Go back or move forward. She chose to continue on.
That initial step refined her into a woman of courage, strength and determination.
Meet Ruth. Naomi’s widowed daughter in law.
Naomi encouraged Ruth to return to her own family. The comforts of her own country. She declines. Choosing instead to go with Naomi. (Ruth 1)
Instead Ruth got up and walked into places she’d never been. Hearing a language she couldn’t speak. And surrounded by faces she didn’t know.
She had every justifiable reason to return to her past life. She didn’t.
Ruth was willing to do hard things. To be uncomfortable. Feel overlooked and out of place.
She faced her fears. And forged ahead with no guarantees. Just a lot of grit and grace.
Her story ended with a loving family and a place in the lineage of Christ.
Had she not started where she was we wouldn’t know her story.
Were there moments when Ruth wondered if her best days were behind her? Perhaps. But God knew otherwise.
We face the same decision Ruth faced. Stay put. Settle. Or step forward.
We can be satisfied with where we are and who we are. No shame there.
I personally am not content or willing to believe my best life has come and gone.
