For years, I spent a lot of energy trying to break bad habits.
I’d succeed then fall back into them. Or just fail completely.
Can you relate?
One day out of pure frustration and perhaps divine intervention I discovered a different approach.
Instead of breaking a bad habit, I would create a new one to replace it.
“Breaking a bad habit” sounds hard. It feels heavy, burdensome. Negative. Impossible. Improbable. Draining.
“Creating a great habit” sounds promising. It feels energizing, empowering and exciting.
I’d spend hours on social media. It was a habit slowly on its way to becoming an addiction I couldn’t break. I tried. Repeatedly.
Instead of removing the habit I decided to replace it with habits that aligned with what I wanted and how I wanted to feel.
So the time I’d spend scrolling I replaced with walks and workouts, journaling, listening to inspirational content, checking off an experience on my Life Adventure List (which I created in 11th grade and add to often).
Of course, I still enjoy social media but instead of two hours a day it’s ten minutes, long enough to catch up with family and friends.
While I don’t know what habits you’ve been trying to break, I would like to offer you a powerful alternative.
So, instead of breaking, begin creating. If you aren’t sure how to do this, let’s discuss either below or via direct message.
Don’t be dominated by bad habits. Be the designer of new ones! Shift your mindset from repair mode to creative one.
It’s a subtle pivot that paves the path for both elevation and ongoing transformation.
